Ikea vs. Inform
Imitation happens. Nowadays many of the most timeless designs are often duplicated, modified and in some cases outright copied. With the increasing costs of home ownership, now more than ever people are choosing more affordable options to furnish their home while introducing a few expensive accessories to elevate the look.
I recently toured a show suite designed by Inform Interiors. This high end store offers modern designs from all over the world, yet I found myself looking at many of the pieces and thinking that I could purchase these items or something similar at Ikea. Many large retailers are creating their own versions of classic designs for a fraction of the price. More than ever, great design is available for great prices to the masses.
Now I’m not saying they are comparable quality, as clearly you get what you pay for. But I wonder if it’s worth investing in those expensive pieces, when most people have no idea of their true value?
Alternatively, why not invest in moderately priced furniture that is still chic yet functional and spend a little extra on high end accessories to elevate the look of your home. You can still achieve the luxurious look you desire, without paying the high end prices.
A great example is the timeless Barcelona chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - the original costs over $4000. New Objects of Desire has an almost identical design for $1699. Can you tell the difference?
