Downsizing - Not a Dirty Word
How do you know when it’s time to downsize? Downsizing can be an emotional decision for some but it doesn’t need to be the dirty word it once was. Downsizing is simply the next stage in life and it doesn’t have to be all bad.
Many people downsize because they realize their house is now larger than they need. Now just because your kids are gone doesn’t necessarily mean you have to move – if you can use the space for hobbies, when family comes to visit and don’t mind the maintenance which comes from extra space (whether interior or exterior) then it may not be time for downsizing. However, if you really don’t need or want the extra space, if the extra rooms are just becoming places to store old junk, if you don’t want to spend time mowing lawns, maintaining the exterior of the house or building, or cleaning extra space that never gets used, then it may be time to move. Downsizing, particularly to a home where the maintenance is at a minimum like a townhouse or condominium and costs are lower, frees you from some responsibilities allowing you to focus on hobbies, friends, family, travel or move into something newer.
Review the pros and cons to downsizing and determine if its right for you.
