How to Purge
After you found your new home, it’s time to get serious about going through your stuff. It can feel overwhelming but start early and in small doses. Schedule 2 or 3 hours at a time to go through a shelf or a drawer or that closet – this will help you feel good about making process and also not so overwhelmed that you procrastinate getting started.
It can also be difficult to part with things, particularly if you have had them for a long time. Really take a hard look at how and when you last used things, chances are if you haven’t needed something in the last 3-6 months then you don’t need to be hanging onto it. Special items can arise like camping equipment for example. Even then however, if you haven’t been camping in years and aren’t planning to pick it up as a serious hobby in the near future, you aren’t going to need it. As you sift through everything, decide what is in good condition and can possibly be donated to charity, given to family members or friends or sold. And remember to dispose of things correctly. Old paint or computer equipment are just a couple of examples of things which do require proper disposal. Furthermore, try to go through everything before you move. If you take it to the new place, chances are it will end up in a box, put in storage and forgotten about or never dealt with. Besides, if you aren’t going to use it, why move it?
